Moving to Switzerland: the essential steps

Moving to Switzerland requires planning and knowledge of local regulations. The first step is obtaining a residence permit: EU/EFTA citizens can apply within 14 days of “arrival, proving employment, funds, or insurance. Non-EU citizens must apply from” abroad, often with a work contract.

After obtaining the permit, it is mandatory to register with the municipality within two weeks. Documents such as a passport, rental contract, and proof of health insurance are required. This registration also allows you to obtain the AVS code, necessary for working and accessing services.

Finding a home is essential but can be challenging, especially in large cities. It’s advisable to search in advance on portals or through agencies. Contracts often require a deposit and financial references.

Health insurance is mandatory for everyone. You must enroll in a health insurance fund within three months. There are various options to compare based on budget and personal needs.

Opening a bank account is useful for managing salary and expenses. Once the initial aspects are settled, you can focus on integration: learning the language, understanding the culture, and building a new network of contacts. Switzerland offers stability and a high quality of life.
